Dr. Elmer Towns is a college and seminary professor, and author of popular scholarly works which include Gospel Light titles such as; Spiritual Breakthrough, What Every Sunday School Teacher Should Know, and Praying the Lord's Prayer for Spiritual Breakthrough. He is also the editor of two encyclopedia's, a popular seminar lecturer, and dedicated worker in Sunday school.
He began his teaching career at Midwest Bible College in St. Louis, Missouri. After his first three years of teaching he was not satisfied with the textbooks so he began writing his own. He has published over 50 books listed in the Library of Congress, four listed in the Christian Booksellers Association, and he is also the 1995 recipient of the coveted Gold Medallion Award awarded by the Christian Booksellers Association for writing book of the year, The Names of the Holy Spirit.
Dr. Towns was president of Winnipeg Bible College for five years. He taught at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, in greater Chicago, Illinois, in the field of Religious Education and Evangelism. He co-founded Liberty University in 1971 with Jerry Falwell. Today, he serves as the Dean of the School of Religion as well as Vice-President of the university. Dr. Towns has given theological lectures and taught intensive seminars at over 50 theological seminaries in America and abroad. He has written over 2,000 reference and/or popular articles and received four honorary doctoral degrees.
His education includes a B.A. from Northwestern College (1954) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, an M.A. from Southern Methodist University (1958) in Dallas, Texas, a Th. M. from Dallas Theological Seminary (1958) also in Dallas, an MRE from Garrett Theological Seminary (1970) in Evanston, Illinois and a D.M. in. from Fuller Theological Seminary (1983) in Pasadena, California.
Dr. Town's has been married to his wife Ruth for 50 years. They have three children and ten grandchildren.
